A dusty mix for a mood-lifting escape to simpler times.

featuring Sinnerman by Nina Simone

Need a lift? This is a simple little mix of some feel goods, a splash of empowering words, a touch of reflective honky tonk and a sprinkle of raw power.

In forty minutes you will be in a goose-bump, tingling trance held together by one of the most lightning-in-a-bottle performances of Nina Simone’s in Sinnerman. If you haven’t yet given that track the time it deserves, now is your chance.

A little bonus to this mix: I’m hoping it’s an algorithm catalyst that can spiral into an interesting niche of gospel, newgrass, jazz and soul.

  1. My, my, my. This playlist will definitely crack open any algorithm into a musical multiverse.
The deep nostalgia of the fiddles. That very fresh bluegrass.
    Joy.
I liked Our Roots Run Deep. Interesting .
And then ( challenge accepted) – Nina Simone for 10.17 minutes . (!)
Made it right through to that last cymbal crash. And then went and had a lie down in a darkened room.

    • Haha, indeed. Nina really gives it her all in that final track. The journey takes you along, for sure, and then does require a lie down once it is done. Can’t even imagine how she felt after performing this one.

  2. This mix is aptly named; it has accompanied some wonderfully fresher breathing moments for me. A particularly suitable accompaniment to a Sunday afternoon. The honkey tonkey-esque start, easing into some beautiful blues (really enjoy the Jon Batiste & Randy Newman colab) and then into some serious feminine vocal power in that Nina Simone ending. Quite the journey for a smooth, restful afternoon … just what the doctor ordered.
