One of the things I like about the whole process of putting together a mix like this each year is they exist as a time capsule. I love that. If anyone else enjoys a track or two that they’ve never heard before that’s such a cool bonus.
Another sick thing is that along the search for nostalgic songs that each represents a different time of my year, I’ve discovered some awesome new stuff I can’t help but include. This time I think I’ve found two rad new bands (Red City Radio, and Little Stranger) that I’ve included and will probably be listening to much more of in 2020.. stoked!
While I mostly avoid including 12 tracks of blisteringly fast skate-punk for my Jimmy Mixes, my music taste does lean on the heavier side, but don’t worry if you’re not into that, it ramps up quite nicely if you listen in track order and is actually more chilled-leaning. A few mellower songs with thoughtful lyrics to ease you in, some surprising bluegrass, a touch of familiar reggae, and of course a light peppering of some heavier stuff.
For some FYI on the heavier stuff: John Floreani is the lead singer of a sick band called Trophy Eyes, the Atreyu song features a stack of vocalists (from Underoath, Goldfinger, Avenged Sevenfold) and is an ode to becoming a father. The singer of Red City Radio has the raddest, deepest voice I’ve heard in punk in a long time (headphones!), and of course there’s a new song by The Menzingers – one of my favourites.
Get it in yer ear-holes!
